Nora was in a hurry as she walked down the Main Street. She had to get home and start dinner for Hassan's boss and his wife who were expected that night. Her shoes made a tapping sound on the concrete as she rushed to her car. She had to stop by the grocery store and drive the short distance home. Then, hopefully, Hassan would be there to help her finish up the meal. Nora knew the house would be fine - just the way they left it. Still, this dinner had put her in a terrible bind as she worked, also. But, she just was not allowed to turn down Hassan's boss for dinner - The two men had been meeting up and had even gone fishing together "Miss, can you spare a dollar?" She was startled from her thoughts. She looked down and sitting at the door of the grocery store was a pitiful old lady. She appeared dirty and was wore tattered clothes. Her weathered old hijab sported a fresh red carnation. "Why, ummm," Nora hem-hawed around. She had not expected this. "Oh, let me see," she was aggravated as she fidgeted in her purse. "Miss, that is okay if you don't have one," the old lady told her. "Maybe I can get a coffee that's left over at one of the restaurants when they are about to close." She looked down, embarrassed. "Oh, no," Nora told her. "Here I found one." She held the crumpled dollar out and the old lady took it. "May Allah swt bless you," she told Nora. "Something good will happen to you soon." "Oh, that is okay," Nora said. "Please enjoy your coffee." She gave her a bright smile and the lady smiled back. Nora finished her grocery shopping, then, remembering the poor old lady at the door, picked up some fresh donuts. She would give them to her to make her coffee more enjoyable. She pushed the grocery cart to the door and looked for the lady, but, she was gone. Somehow, Nora was disappointed. She looked around the parking lot as she pushed the cart to her car. She was nowhere in sight.Nora adjusted her head scarf which had come loose as she raced about looking for the old lady. Well, she had to get home but, along the way, she glanced here and there, searching the streets. She felt so sorry now, for the poor old woman. She didn't see her anywhere. Eight o'clock sharp, the doorbell rang. Harry answered it while Nora filled the juice glasses. Hassan ushered Bilal with him into the living room with juice glasses and the two ladies made off to the guest room where Lubna undid her abaya. Lubna was beautiful. Just as she expected. Perfectly groomed. But, there was something about her that for a brief moment, put Nora into deja vu. What was it about Lubna that seemed so familiar? "Do you have family?" Lubna asked her as she sipped her orange juice . Her beautiful face shined. "Oh, no," Nora answered. "We've only been married nine months." They both laughed when they decided that was long enough to have a baby. Oh, she was going to like this woman. "Do you?" Nora asked in return. "We have one son." She said proudly. "He is away at University, now. "All of our immediate families are back east," Nora told her. "My mother, father, sisters, you name it." They laughed. "Well, all of our families are here. Actually, I have only one family member and that is my mother." Lubna shook her head. "My mother is eccentric, has been for a long time, now. She lives alone, has a few servants and does her own thing." She shrugged. "Sometimes, I think I'm used to some of the things she does but, in the end, I'm to blame for treating her so badly. In other words, she gets her way when she gets bored and pulls some kind of goofy stuff. Any more, I just let her do what she feels like doing." Dinner was served and they chatted while they ate. Nora really liked this woman and she liked her. She knew she would ask the couple over again. "We'll all go on a fishing trip one day," Lubna told her. "That sounds like a good trip," Nora agreed. The night soon ended and Lubna and Bilal bade them goodnight. Nora finished the kitchen and soon she and Hassan went up to their room. Lying in bed, Nora told Hassan about the poor little lady at the grocery store, about how she had had compassion for her and after searching, couldn't find her. Hassan was all ears, his eyes wide. "Do you know who that was?" He asked Nora. "No. Have no idea." Nora answered. "Why, that was Lubna's mother." Hassan clapped his hand to his forehead. "She is the richest woman in this state." "Well, that doesn't matter. I still felt sorry for her." Nora said, unconcerned. "Bilal has told me about her." Hassan explained. "She will do things like that occasionally to see how people react. If they are nice to her, she will be nice to them. She has a lot of influence in this city. I have no idea how she will repay you, but, she will and please don't reject any gift she offers for she will really be insulted." Hassan concluded. "Okay, okay," Nora consoled him. "I won't. Let's get some sleep." The subject was closed. The week went by fast and it wasn't long 'til it was Friday. Just before lunch, Nora's boss,Mariam called her in her office. "You have been doing a wonderful job on the Murphy case." She told her. "But, I think you would do better on the Martin." She looked at the shock on her face. "You heard me - the Martin." She laughed for she was a jolly person and easy to work for. "But, but....." Nora started. Every employee wanted a chance at the Martin case. "No ifs, ands or buts," she said. "The job was meant for you or is it the other way around? You were meant for the job?" She smiled. "Along with it, your salary will increase by a fourth." He concluded. "Now, would you do me the pleasure of having lunch with me? We are meeting with our company president who has to approve everything I do." "Why, I would be pleased," Nora answered, somewhat still in shock. Nora got her purse and her boss awaited her. They walked down to a small cafe close to the office. They came to a booth where sat a woman, dressed in fine clothing, a beautiful diamond ring on her finger and On her head was a colourful hijab. There was something familiar about her. Nora and her boss slid into the seat across from her. "Nora, this is Mrs. Farook," her boss introduced them. "This is the one I told you about." She spoke to the lady. She nodded. "I know about her already," she replied. "She gave me a dollar for coffee the other day. Besides being a wonderful employee, she is also a wonderful person and that counts a lot in my company." She looked at Nora. "Young lady, I sat outside that grocery store for four hours that day and no one would give me the time of day. Then you came along and imagine my surprise when I found out you were one of my own employees." She laughed. "Well, thank you, ma'am," Nora said, the shock had worn off somewhat. "It helps when you enjoy your work, too." She thought of Lubna. Nora's boss was quiet. she wanted the two to get familiar with each other and be comfortable. After lunch, Mrs. Farook told them that she had to go. She wanted to think up something to do for the next day. Nora laughed out loud. So did Mrs. Farooq
