To prepare children for Ramadan, start telling them how excited you are for Ramadan. •According to their age, explain to them why Ramadan is so beautiful and good for us, that Ramadan is the time of our sins to be forgiven and for rewards to be earned, and that it is an opportunity to do good deeds more easily. • If your children are young , read some Islamic books to them about Ramadan. • If your children are older, read with them the various ahadith and verses from the Qur’an that talk about the benefits and special privileges give to us during Ramadan. • Make some plans with your children of things they would like to do during Ramadan, such as visiting or hosting some of their friends’ family, going to a community iftar, or going to the mosque to pray taraweeh. • Talk with them about any special food or desserts they would like you to prepare during Ramada. • If your children are young, play games with them that celebrate Ramadan, and sing songs with them about Ramadan. • Prepare some artwork at home with them about Ramadan, decorate the house and the rooms with their artwork and make it very obvious all through the house that it is a special time. • Encourage young children to fast. Children should be instructed to fast at the age of seven if they are able to, and some scholars said that as in the case of Salaah, a child may be physically disciplined at the age of ten if he does not fast. Children will be rewarded for fasting, and their parents will be rewarded for bringing them up properly and guiding them to do righteous deeds. Al‐Rubayyi’ bint Mu‘awwidh (RA) said, speaking about Ramadan when it was made bligatory: “We used to make our children fast, and we would make them a toy made out of wool. If any one of them started to cry for food, we would give them that toy to play with until it was time to break the fast.” • Extra attention must be given to the matter of girls when they have just reached the age of maturity, for they may fast during their menses out of shyness without making up their fasts later. • Encourage little children to fast after breakfast for a couple of hours, or until lunch or dinner time, depending on the child’s age. Then make a big deal of it, by telling everybody in the family and praising them and so on. • Tell your children that they are good Muslims, and that Allah SWT has given them a lot of reward, and that it has been written for them in their book of good deeds.
